BioBarr Project is structured in 8 workpackages (WP), or groups of activities, in order to achieve its objectives

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Objectives:

  • Setting up administrative and technical management, ensuring timely delivery of all the financial and technical reports to the EC/BBI
  • Ensuring that goals and objectives are clearly defined and fulfilled throughout the project
  • Monitoring progress and supporting appropriate communication and work dynamics within the Consortium.

Tasks:

BIO-BASED MATERIAL EXTRUSION AND FILM MAKING

Objectives:

  • Development and investigation of a new generation of  bioplastic materials based on PHAs, bio-based and biodegradable polymers, to be used in the food packaging sector.

Tasks:

  • Task 2.1. PHA production
  • Task 2.2. PHA compounding
  • Task 2.3. PHA film-making

BIO-BASED MATERIAL FUNCTIONALIZATION

Objectives:

  • Setting up optimal operating condition to functionalization
  • Setting up optimal operating condition to inking biodegradable films

Tasks:

  • Task 3.1. /Task 3.2. PHA functionalization
  • Task 3.3. Film inking

BIO-INKS SET UP

Objectives:

  • Optimization of water based inks suitable for printing and compostable and biodegradable media
  • Realization of a new bio-based and biodegradable ink
  • Optimization of bio-based inks formulations to print in high quality in flexographic/rotogravure method

Tasks:

  • Task 4.1. Existing water based ink optimization and printing conditions selection at lab scale
  • Task 4.2. Development of a new bio-based and biodegradable water based ink
  • Task 4.3. Printing process validation

NEW MATERIALS TEST AND VALIDATION

Objectives:

  • Performance of the migration test to assure the biopolymer safety for food application
  • Quantification of the biodegradability of the developed films
  • Definition of two food model application
  • Characterization of the mechanical and barrier properties of developed material

Tasks:

  • Task 5.1. Application of official migration tests to the developed films
  • Task 5.2. Quantification of the biodegradability
  • Task 5.3. Validation of the films application in food sector
  • Task 5.4. Mechanical and barrier properties of the developed films

VALIDATION IN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT AND FOOD APPLICATION ANALYSIS

Objectives:

  • Evaluation of film application in bakeries packaging
  • Identification of potential risks affecting value chain and recommendations for the future
  • Identification of any regulatory constraints for innovative films applications
  • Identification of best specifications for each innovative material

Tasks:

  • Task 6.1. Validation in industrial environment
  • Task 6.2. Value chain analysis
  • Task 6.3. Legislative framework constraints
  • Task 6.4. Product benchmarking

PROCESS_BASED LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT AND COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS

Objectives:

  • Assessment of environmental and economic performance of the bio-based materials
  • Quantification of environmental impacts, between the biomaterials developed and existing alternatives
  • Recommendations to technology developers on how optimize environmental performance

Tasks:

  • Task 7.1. Process-based life cycle assessment (LCA)
  • Task 7.2. Environmental performance at full commercial-scale: effects of upscaling
  • Task 7.3. Climate change mitigation potential of biomaterial
  • Task 7.4. Cost benefit analysis (CBA)

COMMUNICATION, DISSEMINATION AND EXPLOITATION

Objectives:

  • Identification and characterization of stakeholders and dissemination target groups
  • Definition of result transfer conditions to those targeted groups
  • Preparation of a transversal activities plan aiming at the dissemination of the project results at a European scale
  • Support the promotion and dissemination actions to comply with the previous objective
  • To pave the way for future results exploitation
